A downtown Fairfield building is a total loss after a massive fire Wednesday night.
The fire charred six apartments and several businesses in the building, at 406 W. Depot St., while crews from multiple departments battled the flames.
Firefighters dealt with dangerous conditions at the scene, and decided to fight the fire from the outside.
"About halfway there, there were some explosions and some collapses in the building, so we went into defensive mode," Fairfield fire chief Scott Vaughan said.
Everyone inside the building was able to make it out safely.
Investigators are still not sure what caused the fire, but they will likely be on scene all day working hot spots.
