A running back named Chevon Walker of Fort Myers, Fla., was the first prep recruit to commit to Urban Meyer's 2006 University of Florida recruiting class.
Someone rated Walker the No. 5 high school running back in the nation in 2005, rushing for 2,027 yards and 31 touchdowns for Riverdale High School.
He played in five games for Florida in 2007, carrying the ball four times. He then transferred to Eastern Illinois. Last year, he had 78 carries for 379 yards for the Panthers.
Last week, he was dismissed from the EIU squad, as were two of his teammates, for unspecified violations of team rules. So Iowa won't be the only team short a running back or two for the EIU-Iowa game on Sept. 4.
In happier news, Fox Sports announced that Kurt Warner will be in the broadcast booth for some of its NFL telecasts this season.
Warner will work three games and possibly more.
"Kurt, coming off a possibly Hall of Fame career, had lots of opportunities and wasn't interested in doing a full season," Fox Sports vice chairman Ed Goren said. "He'll find out if this is something he really wants to pursue. And we didn't have a full-season slot open. So the deal, which came together in the last week, worked out well for everybody."
