Hanrahan, Edna F.
Edna F. Hanrahan, 83, longtime Cedar Rapids resident, passed peacefully to her eternal reward at her home in her hometown of Bismarck, N.D., last week on Tuesday morning. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. The Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a vigil service beginning at 5 p.m.
Mrs. Hanrahan resided in Cedar Rapids from 1957 to 1991 where the former member of St. Matthew's Church and her late husband, Don, raised six children.
Born in 1927 in Bismarck and a 1945 graduate of Bismarck's St. Mary's High, the former Edna Florence Rose was the third of three children born to Edgar and Nell Rose.
Edna was preceded in death by her beloved sweet parents; her older brother, Ed Rose; Ed's wife, Marilyn Rose; her brother-in-law, Leonard Gustafson; her husband, Don Hanrahan; and her daughter, Patricia Hanrahan.
Her older sister, Elizabeth Rose Gustafson, survives and is a resident of Missouri Slope Retirement Home in Bismarck.
Survivors include oldest twin son, Mark and Diane Hanrahan of Cedar Rapids and San Antonio, Texas, Ann Dorr of Cedar Rapids, and five sons, Colin, Ryan, Sean, Brendan and Keaton, all of Cedar Rapids. Twin son, Michael and Linda Hanrahan reside in Newport Beach, Calif., with sons, Brian (Austin, Texas) and Brett, and daughters, Brooke and Brittany. Third son, Don, and his wife, Teresa Hanrahan, reside in Austin, Texas with their children, Sarah and Matthew. Daughter, Coleen Hanrahan resides in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with daughter, Sahar, and son, Rakhshan. And the youngest child, Carol Hanrahan Hoff and her husband, David Hoff, reside in Valrico, Fla., with daughters, Kate and Olivia.
Edna earned a B.S. in nursing from Creighton University. She met and married Don J. Hanrahan, originally of Fort Dodge, Iowa, while living and working in Denver, Colo. as a Med Tech after the war. Don and Edna resided in Denver, Colo., St. Louis, Mo., and then Evansville, Ind., before settling in Cedar Rapids in 1957 where they raised their six children, five surviving. Edna also had 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Edna moved from Cedar Rapids back to her hometown of Bismarck a few years after the death of Mr. Hanrahan in 1985.
Edna enjoyed bridge clubs, her bowling friends and reading. Edna volunteered time for Meals on Wheels here in Cedar Rapids. Edna also liked to travel, especially to Ireland, the home of her ancestors, and also loved spending her summers at her lake home in Delhi, Iowa. Edna loved the Catholic Church, was very proud of being Irish, and adored her parents, her husband, Don, and her children.
