UPDATE: Authorities said one person was hurt in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Highway 13 near Mount Vernon Road.
Deputies and firefighters responded around 7:40 a.m. after a car and van collided in the southbound lanes of the highway. Joann H. Lovell, 72, of Cedar Rapids, was attempting to turn onto Highway 13 from Vernon Valley Drive when she struck the van driven by Jessica C. Heiar, 35, of Marion, according to the Linn County sheriff's office.
Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage. One of the vehicles ran through a road sign, splitting the thick post into several pieces. Debris littered the grassy median, where Heiar's van eventually stopped.
Firefighters extricated Lovell and she was transported to Mercy Medical Center. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, deputies said. Heiar was not hurt.
The crash slowed southbound traffic for more than an hour. Lovell was charged with failure to yield and failure to prove security against liability.
