A man charged with robbing an Iowa City bank in 2009 will be jailed until trial following his arrest in Egypt.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Shields on Tuesday found that Mohamed Elkamil would present a flight risk if released and a potential danger to the public.
Court records show Elkamil was indicted by a grand jury last year for the July 20, 2009 robbery of American Bank and Trust in Iowa City. The indictment says he took $70,000 in deposits while brandishing a firearm. He has pleaded not guilty. Trial is scheduled for Jan. 3.
Elkamil was arrested in Egypt on a warrant issued by Interpol and deported back to the U.S. FBI agents arrested him Oct. 6 after he arrived at John F. Kennedy International airport in New York.
Mohamed B. Elkamil is shown in this 2010 mug shot.
