Gochenour, Lois
Lois Gochenour, 90, of 10 Green Mountain Dr., a lifetime resident of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Mercy Hospice.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, with Revs. Paul Akin and George Paterson officiating. Entombment will be in the Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will greet friends after 9 a.m. Friday at Lensing's. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Mercy Hospital Foundation, or First United Methodist Church.
Lois was born June 23, 1919, in Iowa City, a daughter of Ray and Elizabeth Hughes. She married Carl Gochenour on December 9, 1941. She was a 1937 graduate of Iowa City High School and a 1941 graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree. She was a member of Phi Gamma Nu business sorority, University Club, Elks Lodge, I Club, Christian Women, and a lifetime member of ICHS Alumni Association and UI Alumni Association. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for nearly 70 years, and taught Sunday school for many of those. She worked in customer service at Iowa State Bank & Trust, a career she loved, and did volunteer work at Mercy Hospital through Mercy Guild.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Piper (Mike) of Iowa City, and one son, Don Gochenour (Linda) of Mission Viejo, Calif.; five grandchildren, Stacy King (Chris) of Carlsbad, Calif., Bryan Plumb (Rachel) of Round Lake, Ill., Dana Schmooke (Bill) of North Liberty, Jillian (Russ) Daugerdas of Libertyville, Ill., and Ryan Piper (Katie) of North Liberty; seven great-grandchildren, Colin and Brady King, Madelyn and Emma Plumb. Sydney Schmooke, and Courtney and Eleanor Daugerdas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; and two sisters, Ruth Tauber and Helen Jolliffe.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, who will be deeply missed.
