Pierce, Edith Virginia
Edith Virginia Pierce, 86, of Grinnell, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at the Mayflower Health Center after a long illness. Services: 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Holland-Coble Funeral Home, Montezuma, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial: Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River.
She is survived by a sister, Margaret Plagmann; son, Casey Pierce (Charlotte) of Deep River; daughter, Karen Pierce (Bill Hart) of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry Pierce; brother, James Hillman; and granddaughter, Samantha Pierce.
She was born May 31, 1923, to Harlan and Myra Hollingsworth Hillman. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids and taught school. On Nov. 22, 1945, she married Harry Pierce. She was a member of the United Church of Deep River and the Presbyterian Church of Grinnell. Her interest in genealogy led to the establishment of the Poweshiek County Pioneer Cemetery Commission and her membership in the Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society. For many years, she was a Hospice care giver.
Memorials may be made to the United Church of Deep River.
