Goodwin, George Elmer
George Elmer Goodwin passed away April 10, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Jim McCoy and Pastor Schmidt. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home before the service.
George was born in Olin, Iowa, on May 19, 1924, to George Walter and Sarah (Branniger) Goodwin. He lived most of his young life near Urbana. George served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Trinidad for five years. He married Rosella Mae Williams on Oct. 18, 1954, in Kirksville, Mo. During his life he worked at various jobs.
He is survived and will be missed greatly by his wife, Rosella; and children, Sybil Merfeld, Virginia (Gary) Wiltsey, Cindy (Jeff) Ringold, Jody (Ron) Kositzky, Peggy (William) Harrell, George Gene (Lori) Goodwin, Herbert Goodwin and Leo (Karen) Goodwin. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, David, Garth and Gregory; six brothers and two sisters.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman and would spend hours outdoors. When he was no longer able to hunt and fish, he spent many evenings playing bingo or cards. He loved going to Riverside.
A memorial fund has been established.
