Video Sessions -- You want Jim Reid in your life
Marc Morehouse
Apr. 2, 2014 3:39 pm
Iowa linebackers were front and center on Wednesday. Outside linebackers coach LeVar Woods and inside linebackers coach Jim Reid discussed their players, their philosophies and approach to the 2014 Hawkeyes.
Iowa had its fifth spring practice Wednesday and second padded practice this season.
Reid's wisdom, sincerity and thick Massachusetts accent will be worth your time.

Iowa OLB coach LeVar Woods talks recruiting and coaching points.
Woods on Iowa linebackers vs. spread offense, junior OLB Travis Perry -- who gets his shot after two seasons as the primary backup -- and some stuff on the high regard in which Woods holds former Iowa OLB Christian Kirksey, whom he called the template for the position going forward. (When Woods played at Iowa in the mid-90s, he was 245. Kirksey was in the high 220s last season. The OLB has to be a puncher and a mover.)
Woods on improving how he recruits and Jim Reid as a mentor. I asked some technical LB stuff, some of the nuts and bolts on how things work. That's in there, too.
Here's Jim Reid on coaching his new group of LBs to make fast mistakes. Also, I asked about sophomore WLB Reggie Spearman. Last year, Spearman spent so much time in Reid's office, the team called him Reggie Reid. No definitive answers on Spearman. This is his first go-round as the No. 1.
What Reid loves most about coaching. "The mind of a champion," how do great players and great people think and act? On senior MLB Quinton Alston, who is a senior and who is getting his first shot as a starter. The importance of the third down package Iowa used last season. The results were good, but it also got Alston and Spearman on the field, which should pay dividends this year.
Again, "Don't be afraid to make a mistake." Growth of the new LBs. A question on Reid's work with a Virginia defense in 2012 that had nine new starters and finished No. 28 in the country in total defense. What does he like to get done during the 12 minutes of individual time he gets with his inside LBs at practice?
At 7 minutes, Reid speaks about the roster.
Transcripts from today.
