For the second time in a year, a University of Iowa wrestler has been cited for illegal hunting.

This time, it was senior grappler Ethen P. Lofthouse Bottorff, commonly known as Ethen Lofthouse. Iowa City police and animal services were called to Lofthouse's residence at 36 Jema Court on the west side of Iowa City at 12:40 p.m. Friday after receiving a report that residents were shooting arrows at a duck in the backyard. Jema Court is near Willow Creek Park, a wooded area bisected by Willow Creek.

Responding officers spoke with a witness who said the residents had shot a duck and taken it into their garage.

Police made contact with the residents, including Lofthouse, who showed the officers the dead duck, a mallard. Police said while they were questioning one of Lofthouse's roommates, Lofthouse admitted that he was the one who shot the duck with his bow and showed officers the bow he used to make the kill.

Lofthouse told police he was an avid hunter and had intended to eat the duck. Lofthouse was cited for discharging the bow and hunting out of season.

Lofthouse, a native of Avon, Utah who wrestles at 184 pounds, is a two-time All-American. During the 2012-13 season, he posted a 22-9 record, placed third at the Big Ten Championships and wrestled to a fifth place finish at the NCAA championships.

Last November, two freshmen wrestlers, Connor Ryan and Alex Meyer, were cited for discharging toy guns and slingshots after admitting to hunting rabbits on campus near the west side residence halls. They were also cited for hunting after hours and Meyer was cited for hunting without a license. The men allegedly told police they were going to use the rabbit pelts - which were found in their Hillcrest dorm room - to make hats.

Ryan and Meyer both remain with the team, according to the online roster.

UPDATE: The University of Iowa has issued a statement responding to the incident:

“Senior Ethen Lofthouse was cited Friday for illegal hunting. Iowa City Police allege Lofthouse shot a duck outside his residence with a bow and arrow. The UI Athletics Department is aware of the situation, and is working with Lofthouse through the process outlined in the UI Athletics Department Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.”
