On the last weekend for active recruiting, the Iowa Hawkeyes picked up three commitments.

According to, running back Akrum Wadley and wide receiver A.J. Jones committed to the Hawkeyes on Saturday. Sunday evening, KDEC sports director Darin Svenson reported on his Twitter feed that Decorah linebacker Josey Jewell committed to Iowa on a full-ride scholarship.

[EDIT -- Decorah High School sent out a release early this morning confirming Jewell's commitment to Iowa. Here's the release (with a statement from Jewell):

Decorah High School Senior Josey Jewell has verbally committed to play football at the University of Iowa.

Jewell has been a four-sport standout for Decorah High School in not only football, but basketball, track and baseball. This past year, Jewell helped lead the Decorah Vikings to the Class 3A state championship in football after a runner-up finish in 2011. Along the way, all-state honors were earned both seasons while amassing 3,240 yards rushing with 42 touchdowns as a fullback and 190 solo and 120 assisted tackles as a linebacker.

“I am very thankful and excited to have the opportunity to become a Hawkeye. My teammates, teachers and coaches have done a great deal to help me reach this point. I am hopeful that the lessons learned thus far from them will help me contribute as much as I can to the Iowa Football program.”

Jewell plans to sign is national letter of intent on February 6, 2013.

I'm glad there are some stats. I couldn't find any last night.]

With the national signing period beginning Wednesday, the Hawkeyes now have 19 commitments for the 2013 class. Iowa is in the running for at least two more.

Linebacker Reggie Spearman (Chicago Simeon High School) is down to Iowa, Syracuse, Illinois and Minnesota. He will make his decision known during a news conference at his school 6 p.m. Tuesday. Running back Jonathan Parker (St. Louis' Christian Brothers High School) has been a Tulsa commit since September. He recently received and Iowa offer and visited this weekend, according to He likely will decide Monday.

Wadley, who rushed for 1,548 yards and 29 TDs for Weequahic High School last season, was a off-the-radar name for Iowa. Head coach Kirk Ferentz visited Wadley (5-10, 185) at his New Jersey high school on Tuesday (Wadley played football at Weequahic, but attends University High School in Newark, which doesn't field a football team. University High is three miles from Rutgers.)

Wadley committed to Temple on Jan. 21. What position he ends up at with Iowa is open. He could be a running back, slot receiver or defensive back.

"They like me on both offense and defense, actually," Wadley told "I've talked a lot with the [defensive backs] coach [Phil Parker] before, but when I went to my position meeting on Saturday they had me go with the offensive coordinator. He really likes me in the slot and maybe running the ball a little bit too, but I've got to gain more weight. They said we'll work out what's best for me once I get there."

Jones (6-3, 195) caught 23 passes for 390 yards and seven touchdowns his senior year at South Oak Cliff High School (Dallas, Texas). He had offers from New Mexico State, Colorado State, Texas Tech and Iowa. He committed to NMSU and CSU, but committed when Ferentz offered during his visit last weekend. He also was offered a visit to Texas Tech, but chose to visit Iowa City.

"They like my height and that I can stretch the field with my speed," Jones told "They're looking for me to come in and compete next year."

Jewell (6-2, 195) helped Decorah to the Class 3A state championship last fall. The Gazette/KCRG player of the year led the Vikings in rushing, receiving, scoring, tackles, interceptions, interception yards and punt returns. He completed the only pass he attempted, intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles.

He discussed doubters who said he won’t be able to compete on the FBS level in a December interview.

“I’ve seen on the Iowa preps and stuff, looking at those things. I probably shouldn’t but I’ve just been reading them,” said Jewell, whose only other offer was Northern Iowa. “I’ve just been reading them and I don’t know, it just makes me be more determined and work harder to get to that area to prove them wrong.”

Wide receiver Connor Keane (6-1, 185) will walk on with the Hawkeyes in August. For Cretin Derham Hall High School (St. Paul, Minn.) last season, Keane had 20 catches for 442 yards and seven TDs.
