Video: Shirts and skins basketball at Carver
Sep. 15, 2012 1:24 pm
It was a meeting of the past with the present.
Near the end of Saturday's shirts and skins scrimmage at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, members of Iowa's 1970 basketball team stood court-side watching the current group of Hawkeyes. Iowa's director of basketball operations, Jerry Strom, pulled the current squad off the court and introduced the men to one another.
Strom told today's players that the 1970 team was the best to ever play at Iowa. He's probably right. That team finished 14-0 in Big Ten play, only the fourth squad in league history to finish unbeaten in at least 14 games. That group averaged 102.9 points a game, still a league record. Four starters were NBA draft picks and two -- John Johnson and Fred Brown -- played in the NBA all-star game and won an NBA title. Kevin Kunnert later was a first-round NBA draft pick but was ineligible to play in 1970 because he was a freshman.

The groups met for only a couple of minutes, then the current group shifted back to the court to finish the scrimmage. The 1970 and 1968 basketball squads will be honored in a pregame ceremony at Kinnick Stadium today.
