Prep football rankings: Valley is a unanimous No. 1 in 4A

Tigers won showdown against Dowling

The Gazette’s weekly high school football poll now features three unanimous No. 1 teams.

By virtue of Friday’s 16-9 showdown victory over West Des Moines Dowling, top-ranked West Des Moines Valley solidified its hold on the top spot in Class 4A, capturing all six first-place votes.

Dowling remained second, followed by Cedar Rapids Washington, Ankeny Centennial and Iowa City West.

Valley is joined in the unanimous club by North Fayette Valley (2A) and Iowa City Regina (1A).

North Fayette Valley eased to a 34-14 win over Cascade in a rainy 2A District 4 showdown last week, while Regina whipped Wapello, 48-6. Union is rated second in 2A; Pella Christian is No. 2 in 1A.

In Class 3A, Norwalk maintains a razor-thin edge over Cedar Rapids Xavier and three-time defending champion Pella. Norwalk received 50 points in this week’s balloting, Xavier and Pella 49 apiece.

Defending Class A champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck remains the top team in that class. The Rebels earned 50 points, followed by Algona Garrigan (48) and Saint Ansgar (45).

Don Bosco stays at No. 1 in 8-Player and is followed by Audubon and Fremont-Mills.
