IOWA CITY — It is time for football.
This is the post that will reach into all of the info buckets and try to get you what you might want to know from the Kinnick Stadium press box.
Nuggets like the pic. Miami (Ohio) has an equipment truck. I wonder if Ben Roethlisberger bought it for the RedHawks. You know he played there right. I’ll throw in a few paragraphs from that time Iowa traveled to Oxford, Ohio, and had a showdown with Roethlisberg in 2002.
— The gentleman @PlannedSickDays is perhaps even geekier about Iowa football than I am. His nerd alert squad (I’m saying this with all tenderness, we really are cut out of the same cloth) noticed that Iowa WR Jay Scheel wasn’t wearing pads in the video Iowa official site released of honorary captain Dan McCarney’s speech to the team on Friday (I think it was Friday, I had a chance to talk with Dan when we were on the CBS 2 morning show and he was wearing the same clothes in that vid).
Here’s the link: Go Iowa Awesome.
I’m going to run down and do some radio with WMT. Will be back soon. Welcome to 12 hours of typing!
— OK, I’m back.
— Took a short video of the players and coaches getting off the bus.
True freshmen I noticed: TE Noah Fant, WR Devonte Young and QB Nathan Stanley. It was quick. I’m sure there are at least double digits.
— OK, WRs and QBs are on the field. Jay Scheel is dressed and didn’t warm up with SC coach Chris Doyle. I think that’s a go.
— RB Toks Akinribade is out there. Maybe he plays.
— Gold cleats. If you follow RB Akrum Wadley on SnapChat (I’m not on Snap yet), you already know the Hawkeyes will be wearing yellow and black cleats this season. They are. Can confirm.
— Skill guys are up the tunnel. We’ll see uniformed specailists soon.
I’m joking, but it might be a good thing that punter Ron Coluzzi and kicker Keith Duncan were on the bus. They’ve been here since June and probably would be stuck in traffic otherwise.
BTW, wrote about Duncan in the “3 and Out.” I forgot Coluzzi quote on the true freshman walk-on from North Carolina.
“Keith has been just a little more consistent than the other guys.”
And . . .
“Coming from North Carolina, he’s a very mature kid. He’s away from home, he’s in a Big Ten environment, there’s a lot of pressure on him. But he handles it very well. He doesn’t look like an 18-year-old kid, especially when you’re talking to him.”
And . . .
“With time, he’ll learn it doesn’t matter if there’s one person out there or if there’s 80,000 people. Noise is noise. If you’re in a home stadium or away stadium, it doesn’t matter. The ball going through the uprights is all that really counts.”
— Iowa radio sideline reporter Rob Brooks said no on WR Jay Scheel today. Might be the hamstring that had him out of camp for awhile. Sophomore Jerminic Smith will get the start.
— Check on Duncan’s distance: Low trajectory from 45 and 46, but good. Right hash from 42, good. It’s all been good. He seems to be a short striker on the long ones. Quick operation time isn’t a bad thing. Wonder about trajectory.
— I’ve now attached a pregame picture gallery. Check it out.
— Iowa does have four kickers warming up — Duncan, Miguel Recinos, Mick Ellis and Caleb Shudak.
— Coluzzi and redshirt freshman Colten Rastetter are working punter.
— KF on the radio right now:
Camp was tough to read. Lots of injuries. Saw development and saw somethings come together about a week ago.
Health: Scheel is out today, now per KF. Healthy outside of that. No word on when Scheel might be ready. I don’t think it’s serious, just think this is precautionary. Assuming it’s hamstring, those are tricky.
Daniels at C. Welsh at RG. Keegan Render will play. Has grown his game. One of most improved players on the team, KF said.
With Scheel out, McCarron is improved. Smith is the SE. Mentions Ronald Nash as improved.
Amani Hooker will be in on special teams.
Will LB will be Bo Bower to start. Jack Hockaday and Aaron Mends will be out there at some point.
On DEs: Parker Hesse is growing, developing. Anthony Nelson has practiced well.
On K/P: Tale of two cities (nice reference, the man has read books!).
Duncan has been most consistent at K.
— CJB is wearing a lineman-type brace on his left knee. Tough to see. It’s tucked under the uniform and socks.
— DT Jake Hulett is out (broken ankle). TE Jon Wisnieski is still out with a sprained MCL (left knee).
— First O-line from left to right: Croston, Myers, Daniels, Welsh and Boettger. Second OL: Waechter, Ross Reynolds, Lucas LeGrand, Render and Levi Paulsen.
— True freshman QB Nathan Stanley was the No. 2 QB in the team portion of warmups.
OK, signing off here. Half hour to kick. Enjoy the game.
