CEDAR RAPIDS — The date and site have changed for the 14th edition of Rivalry Saturday, but the field is typically excellent.
Defending state champions North Scott (Class 4A) and Springville (1A) headline the eight-game girls’ basketball packet, scheduled for Nov. 25 at the brand-new gymnasium on the Coe College campus.
Springville (25-2 last season) has been to the 1A final each of the last three years and has won the last two titles. Led by seniors Mikayla Nachazel and Rylee Menster, the Orioles have the vast majority of their roster back, and have a new coach in Christina Zaruba, who succeeds Nate Sanderson. They’ll face Panorama (22-2) in the fifth game, scheduled for 3:35 p.m.
North Scott (21-5) outlasted Marion in overtime for the 4A crown and faces Center Point-Urbana (22-4) in the finale, at 8:20. Led by Drake recruit Allie Wooldridge, the Stormin’ Pointers were 3A semifinalists last season and climb to 4A this year.
The day begins at 9:15 a.m. with Rivalry Saturday newbies Van Buren and Algona Garrigan, both 16-7 last year. Then it’s Maquoketa Valley (19-5) and MFL MarMac (9-11) at 10:50.
River Valley Conference rivals Iowa City Regina (26-1) and Bellevue (17-7) are scheduled for 12:25 p.m. Regina was a 2A semifinalist last year and is led by Illinois State recruit Mary Crompton.
Iowa commit Logan Cook and Iowa City West (21-4) will face Davenport Assumption (16-8) at 2 p.m.
At 5:10, Marion (24-2) and Linn-Mar (12-11) will tangle at Rivalry Saturday for the fourth straight year — the Lions have won the last three meetings. Marion is the likely preseason No. 1 in 4A, and features senior Chloe Rice (Saint Louis commit) and sophomore Kayba Laube (UNI).
North Linn (24-2) and Cascade (23-3) tangle in the 6:45 matchup. Both were 2A state qualifiers last year, with Cascade reaching the semifinals.
