Runners survive sloppy Seminole Valley cross country course

Cross country: Murphy, Skopec prevail in the mud

CEDAR RAPIDS — Ryan Murphy gazed down past his mud-speckled legs, to his mud-tortured shoes.

“I’m going to take these home and rinse them off,” he said.

Heavy rains through the past two days did a number on the lowlands of Seminole Valley Park, and, as a result, hundreds of pairs of footwear at the Cedar Rapids Invitational cross country meet Thursday afternoon.

“I just ran in my flats,” Murphy said after pulling away in the final mile to win the boys’ race in 15 minutes, 59 seconds. “I wish I would have worn my spikes.”

Officials spared competitors from running through the worst of it, but some of the inches-deep mud just couldn’t be avoided.

Few complained.

“It felt good. It was fun,” said Marion’s Jeremy Fopma, the boys’ runner-up.

Iowa City West’s girls and Cedar Rapids Prairie’s captured the team competition.

Led by individual champion Gabby Skopec (18:56), the Women of Troy — ranked second in Class 4A — edged No. 3 Iowa City High, 55-65.

Skopec pulled away from Muscatine’s Brina Kraft midway through the race and won easily. Prairie’s Hannah Frazee came on late and finished second in 19:15.

“It was sloppy, but I liked the course. I didn’t get to run it last year,” said Skopec, who missed last year’s state-qualifying meet at Seminole Valley due to a stress fracture in her heel. “I was kind of afraid of losing a shoe in the mud, but I just wanted to run what came to me.”

Bailey Nock and Claire Ronnebaum added sixth- and eighth-place finishes for West. Mary Arch and Emily Bywater were ninth and 10th for City High. Cedar Rapids Washington’s Reagan Gorman was fifth.

Fourth-rated Prairie relied on its pack to win the boys’ race comfortably, with 59 points. West shaded City High for second, 95-98. Mount Vernon-Lisbon, the top-ranked team in 3A, was fourth with 131.

Cam Steffens paced Prairie, finishing sixth.

Murphy was in a four-man pack with Marion’s Fopma and Myles Bach, and West’s Ali Ali midway through the race, then surged. Fopma was second in 16:03; Bach was third in 16:08.

“I just tried to keep my form comfortable and not use too much energy,” said Murphy, who has college visits lined up with Iowa, Tulsa and Wisconsin.

For Fopma and Bach, it was an opportunity to run with some of the state’s best in 4A.

“Running with that competition, it’s just fun,” Fopma said. “I liked it. We needed it.”

Kolby Greiner and Ali were fourth and fifth for West.
