Waterloo explodes for 5 straight goals in 2nd and 3rd periods for 5-2 win over C.R. RoughRiders

WATERLOO — The Waterloo Black Hawks scored five straight goals between 1:44 of the second period and 7:28 of the third to top the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-2, Thursday night in the USHL teams’ annual Thanksgiving clash at Young Arena.

Marek Valach got the Riders on top first, scoring a power-play goal 24 seconds into the second period. It was his fifth goal of the season and was assisted by Nathan Smith and Harrison Roy.

Garrett Wait tied things for Waterloo just 1:33 later, and the Black Hawks went ahead for good on a successful Jack Drury penalty shot 33 seconds after that. Matej Blumel and Drury scored again before late in the second period for a 4-1 Waterloo lead.

Jackson Cates made it a 5-1 game seven-plus minutes into the third period. Kevin Lombardi scored his second goal of the season with 3:02 left for the final margin.

Jared Moe was the winning goaltender for Waterloo, Blake Pietila the loser for Cedar Rapids. The teams play again Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Waterloo has a 10-6 record for 20 standings points. Cedar Rapids 6-7 for 12 standings points.
