SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — That’s one way to gain a pair of United States Hockey League standings points.
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders built a 6-0 lead against the Sioux Falls Stampede, gave it away, but won in a shootout, 7-6, Saturday night at Sanford Arena.
Marek Valach and Nathan Smith had successful tries on succesive attempts in the shootout for Cedar Rapids (5-4-0, 10 points), with goalie Blake Pietila stopping both Sioux Falls shooters. The RoughRiders play a home-and-home series next weekend against Madison, with the home game Saturday, Nov. 11.
Smith scored a power-play goal just 1:16 in to put the RoughRiders up right away. Marc McLaughlin, playing just his second game of the season because of injury, scored 1:43 later, with defenseman Chase Blackmun making it a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Harry Roy, Steven Agriogianis and Dalton Messina scored in the first 12 minutes of the second period to go up a half-dozen. But that’s when Sioux Falls made its comeback, scoring three goals in the final seven minutes of the second and tying it with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the third.
Three of the Sioux Falls goals came on the power play.
