PEORIA, Ill. — Aaron Whitefield hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the 12th inning to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 5-3 win over the Peoria Chiefs in a Thursday night Midwest League baseball game at Dozer Park.
Ariel Montesino singled to left with two outs in the C.R. 12th against losing Peoria relief pitcher Estarlin Arias. Whitefield then followed with his winning drive to left field.
It was his fourth hom run this season.
Quin Grogan came on to pitch the bottom of the 12th for the Kernels and got the save, allowing a one-out single but striking out two. The pitching win went to Alex Robinson (1-1), who threw two scorless innings.
Jaylin Davis had three hits for the Kernels (12-9), with two apiece coming from Montesino, Whitefield, Mitchell Kranson and Caleb Hamilton. It was Hamilton’s solo home run in the seventh that provided the game’s first run.
Peoria scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead, only to have Cedar Rapids tie things in the eighth. The Kernels grabbed a 3-2 edge with a ninth-inning run, only to have Peoria send it to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
The teams play again Friday night.
