'Neon-orange' Hawks roll at home meet

Girls' track and field: Shift to sprinting working well for Kirstin Skriver

CEDAR RAPIDS — Kirstin Skriver feels a little more connection. And a little more speed.

Traditionally a 400-meter runner, the junior from Cedar Rapids Prairie is dabbling into shorter events this season.

“Actually, I really like it,” she said. “I still do some distance training. I feel like I can help the team more ways now. It makes me feel more connected.”

After anchoring the winning sprint medley relay, Skriver broke 27 seconds for the first time in the 200, helping the Hawks capture the Prairie Invitational girls’ track and field meet Tuesday evening at John Wall Field.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be that fast today,” she said after finishing in 26.87 seconds. “It was a nice surprise.”

Prairie broke out brand-new, highly visible uniform tops (“neon orange,” Skriver called them) and compiled 166 points to lead the five-team field.

Waterloo West was second with 139, followed by Cedar Rapids Xavier (116).

This meet is wedged in an awkward spot in the season, with the Drake Relays last week and Mississippi Valley Conference divisionals coming up Thursday.

The number of teams has steadily dropped in recent years, and there is talk of moving the date to before Drake.

Prairie won six events, including four relays — both medleys, and the 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays.

Alicia Sill led a 1-2 finish in the discus, flinging it 113 feet, 10 inches.

Xavier’s Maddix Stovie was a double-winner, running on the Saints’ triumphant shuttle hurdle relay quartet and coming from behind to claim the 400-meter hurdles in 1:16.16.

The Saints won both distance events: Claire Iversen in the 3,000, Katie Tallett in the 1,500.

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Amara Taylor led the field in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.98 seconds.

Waterloo West won seven events.
