Katie Tallett's journey: From pom squad to D-I distance runner

Track and field: Xavier senior sweeps 3,000 and 1,500 at 3A state qualifier

MARION — Running wasn’t on Katie Tallett’s radar during her first two years at Cedar Rapids Xavier.

“I did poms,” she said. “I liked the social aspect of it.”

But a lot of her friends on the poms squad graduated after her sophomore year, and Tallett shifted gears.

She went out for track “just for fun” as a junior as a middle-distance competitor — “the 4-by-8 was my race,” she said — before tackling the longer distances this spring.

Now, she’s a double regional champion. A wannabe marathoner. And, in a few months, a Division-I athlete.

Who’d have ever thought?

“Not me,” she said. “I’ve been training a lot, I love it, and it has definitely paid off.”

Tallett surged midway through both races, winning the girls’ 3,000 meters (10:44.69) and the 1,500 (5:00.51) at Thursday’s Class 3A state-qualifying track and field meet at Thomas Park Field.

A Drake University signee for track and cross country, Tallett will compete on her future track next week.

The top two finishers are automatic qualifiers for the state meet next weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The at-large qualifiers will be determined Friday.

Dubuque Wahlert swept the team championships Thursday, the boys in dramatic fashion.

Tied with Marion heading into the final boys’ event, the Golden Eagles edged the Indians, 139-137, with Mount Vernon third with 128.

Wahlert’s girls won six of seven relays and scored 160 points. Solon was second with 132, followed by Mount Vernon (119).

Led by double-winners Blair Brooks (high jump, long jump) and Myles Bach (3,200, 1,600), Marion won six boys’ events and racked up eight automatic qualifiers.

Brooks set a personal best in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 7 inches.

“It was nice to do it on my home track,” he said.

Brooks nicked the bar on his final try at 6-7, and it stayed up. He nicked it again on his first shot at 6-8. The bar stayed up for a moment, then tumbled.

“I thought it was going to stay up again,” he said.

Mount Vernon throwing ace Tristan Wirfs injured his ankle in the discus, but still won it at 186-3. He didn’t use his spin in the shot, throwing 58-7 1/2 basically off one foot.

The Mustangs have eight automatic qualifiers on the girls side, seven on the boys. Marion and Solon both collected five automatic girls’ qualifiers.
