Iowa City West rules Kingston again

Boys track & field: Trojans win 6 events, claim Wilkinson title

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa City West boys’ track and field team is a year older. And a team without glaring weakness.

“We don’t have many holes we have to fill,” senior Max Hill said. “It’s an exciting team.”

The Trojans ruled the Kingston Stadium track for the second time this week, capturing the Wilkinson Relays title Friday night.

West won six events and compiled 107.5 points to lead the 11-team field. Cedar Rapids Kennedy was next with 78 points, followed by Cedar Falls (73.5).

It was a little closer than West’s 69-point romp at the John Ask Relays on Tuesday, but another impressive performance nonetheless.

“The main thing is, we didn’t graduate a lot of people,” said Hill, who won the 110-meter hurdles. “We’ve got a lot of people that stepped up and filled those holes.”

West didn’t have a dominant individual. Hill was one of five different guys that won an individual event.

“I just got out good and carried it through the whole race,” he said after finishing in 14.97 seconds.

Other individual champions for the Trojans were Jared Sams-Merriwether in the high jump (he cleared 6 feet, 4 inches), Gabe Caruthers in the 400 meters (51.52), Austin West in the 200 (22.94) and Kolby Greiner in the 1,600, who closed his effort of 4:29.27 with a 64-second final lap to pull away.

Derek Nugent, Greiner, Jeff Garbutt and Ethan McAreavy ran to the 3,200-meter relay title in 8:15.34.

Kennedy’s Jackson Coker, the defending 4A state champion in the discus, swept the throws convincingly.

Coker’s discus effort of 170 feet, 10 inches was 28 feet better than the closest challenger, and vaulted to No. 2 in the state (all classes) this season. He threw the shot 59-0 1/4.

Jesse Price anchored two winning relays for the Cougars — the sprint medley (1:36.36) and the 800-meter relay (1:31.78). Malik Haynes was the long-jump champion, sailing 22 feet.

Coker and Haynes staked the Cougars to a 45-point effort in the field events.

Other Metro champions were Prairie’s Cameron Steffens in the 3,200-meter run (10:07.71), Linn-Mar’s shuttle hurdle relay (1:00.82) and Jefferson’s 400-meter relay (45.10).

Cedar Falls’ Seb Gearhart moved into the state lead in the 800, winning a competitive race in 1:55.97.
