Facts and figures on the 9 area teams playing at Fort Dodge this week

FORT DODGE — Capsules on area qualifiers for the state softball tournament this week at the Rogers Sports Complex:

 

Class 5A

No. 3 CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (38-4)

Coach — Brian Erbe (15th year overall, 497-191; 5th year at Jefferson, 173-42)

Top hitters — Too many to list in this short of a space. Emily Oler (sr.) has the top average at .545, with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs. Leadoff Avery Guy (sr.) hits .527 and has scored 66 runs. Lindsey Culver (soph.) is at .512, and leads the J-Hawks in home runs (18) and RBIs (69).

Top pitchers — Oler has an 18-1 mark with a 2.90 ERA. Younger sister Erica Oler (jr.) will probably see the majority of the innings this week. She is 19-3 with a 0.90 ERA, 134 strikeouts and 16 walks in 132 innings.

State tournament history — 23rd appearance, and fourth in the last five years. Three-time champion (1983, 1997, 1998), two-time runner-up (2004, 2005).

First-round opponent — J-Hawks face No. 6 Urbandale (31-8) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 4 CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (35-7)

Coach — Maddison LeClere (1st year, 35-7)

Top hitters — The Cougars’ top four bats all are above .400. Iowa signee Ashley Hamilton (sr.) is the leadoff and leading hitter at .462, followed by Kaylin Kinney (fr.) at .460 and Ashley Winterowd (jr.) at .459. Kinney has 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 53 RBIs, and Megan Weber (sr.) has eight homers.

Top pitchers — Kennedy has four quality pitchers, led by Kinney (12-3, 1.63 ERA, 116 K, 16 BB in 103 innings) and eighth-grader Jayme Scheck (9-2, 1.54, 109 K, 6 BB in 68 IP).

State tournament history — 3rd appearance, first since 1999.

* First-round opponent — Cougars face No. 5 Johnston (36-5) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 3A

No. 7 CENTER POINT-URBANA (29-10)

Coach — Don Vanourney (1st year, 29-10)

Top hitters — This is a team with four regulars hitting .400 or better, paced by Katelyn Banning (sr.) at .452. Maddie Karr (jr.) has returned successfully from a torn ACL that cost her the 2016 season; she is hitting .448 with 11 home runs and a team-high 49 RBIs. Olivia Brecht (jr.) is at .415 and leads the team with 50 runs.

Top pitchers — Bailey Smith (sr.) and Natalea Cook (jr.) are 12-4 and 10-4, respectively. Smith owns a 2.14 ERA; Cook is at 3.11.

State tournament history — 4th appearance, and third in the last four years.

First-round opponent — Stormin’ Pointers face No. 4 Humboldt (31-4) at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

No. 8 MOUNT VERNON (28-15)

Coach — Robin Brand (6th year at Mount Vernon, 152-89; 10th year overall)

Top hitters — Libby Ryan (sr.) provides speed and savvy at the top of the lineup. The Drake recruit is hitting .485 with 72 runs and 63 stolen bases. Sammy Moss (soph.) is at .484 with 21 doubles, and leads the team in RBIs with 60. Bailey Sullivan (jr.) is batting .383 with 40 RBIs.

Top pitchers — Sophomores Madi Speed and Amanda Roe are the Mustangs’ mound duo. Speed is 16-6 with a 3.38 ERA; Roe is 9-7 with a 3.47 ERA and 93 strikeouts.

State tournament history — 5th appearance, and third in a row. Mustangs were sixth in 3A last year.

First-round opponent — Mustangs face No. 3 Sioux Center (23-6) at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Class 2A

No. 8 IOWA CITY REGINA (27-11)

Coach — Jon Prottsman (18th year overall, 447-256; 11th year at Regina, 255-177)

Top hitters — This is a balanced lineup. Sarah Lehman (sr.) has the top hitting rate at .420, with six home runs. Emma Corkery (sr.) leads the squad in runs at 30, and is hitting .362. Katie Bracken (soph., .353) is the RBI leader with 29.

Top pitchers — Lehman (13-6) is one of the top pitchers in the 2A field. She has a 1.06 ERA and 222 strikeouts and 33 walks in 132 1/3 innings. Bracken is 10-4 with a 2.06 ERA, 135 K’s and 19 walks in 98 2/3 innings.

State tournament history — 7th appearance, and third in a row. Regals were 2A champions in 2011 and 2015, runners-up last year.

First-round opponent — Regals face No. 6 North Union (30-6) at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Class 1A

No. 1 LANSING KEE (35-2)

Coach — Elizabeth Hill (7th year, 154-93)

Top hitters — Kendra Cooper (jr.) is hitting .521 with 13 home runs, 58 runs and 42 RBIs. Last year’s 1A tournament captain, Courtney Cooper (sr.) is batting .472 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs. Nikki Wood (jr., .444, 53 runs) and Chloe Severson (.410, 8 HR, 42 runs, 44 RBIs) add depth to a stout lineup.

Top pitchers — The Coopers are the whole show here. Kendra is 18-1 with a 0.58 ERA and 177 strikeouts and 22 walks in 97 innings. Courtney is 17-1 with a 0.30 ERA, 139 K’s and 13 walks in 94 innings.

State tournament history — 4th appearance, and third in the last four years. Hawks are defending 1A champions.

First-round opponent — Hawks face Montezuma (19-12) at 11 a.m. Monday.

BELLE PLAINE (23-6)

Coach — Cathy Cronbaugh (10th year, record NA)

Top hitters — Shaylee Dodd (soph.) leads the team at .452 with 42 runs. Grace Parrott (jr.) is hitting .415 with a team-high 31 RBIs, and Katy Ward (sr.) is at .375 with 26 RBIs.

Top pitchers — Katie Cubbage (soph.) does most of the work in the circle. She is 19-4 with a 1.87 ERA, 141 strikeouts and 36 walks in 164 1/3 innings.

State tournament history — 2nd appearance, and second in a row. Plainsmen were sixth in 1A last year.

First-round opponent — Plainsmen face No. 6 Clarksville (27-2) at 5 p.m. Monday.

SIGOURNEY (22-11)

Coach — Shelly Streigle (13th year at Sigourney, 207-150; 15th year overall)

Top hitters — The Barthelman sisters, who led Sigourney to a state track and field title in May, are the focal point on the basepaths, too. Summer Barthelman (soph.) is hitting .466 and has scored 29 runs; Autum Barthelman (jr.) is at .458 with 48 runs and eight triples. They have combined for 72 stolen bases.

Top pitchers — Kendall Streigle (sr.) has posted a 19-5 mark and 2.72 ERA. She has struck out 75 batters and walked 27 in 151 2/3 innings.

State tournament history — 4th appearance, and the first since 2001.

First-round opponent — Savages face No. 2 Akron-Westfield (35-2) at 3 p.m. Monday.

MONTEZUMA (19-12)

Coach — Josh Anderson (7th year, 95-133)

Top hitters — Hanna Jones (jr.) is batting .447 with 10 doubles and 29 RBIs. Cassidy Watts (jr.) has four of Montezuma’s six home runs, plus seven triples, and is hitting .389 with a team-highs in runs (31) and RBIs (33).

Top pitchers — Jones owns a 16-10 record with a 2.20 ERA. She has fanned 137 batters and walked 31 in 175 1/3 innings of work.

State tournament history — 1st appearance.

First-round opponent — Bravettes face No. 1 Lansing Kee (35-2) at 11 a.m. Monday.
