Jeremy Fopma, Bailey Nock still have that championship look

Cross country: Defending state titlists reign at Cedar Rapids Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS — Jeremy Fopma would have liked some company, would have preferred a challenge.

“The last half of the race, I wish there would have somebody up there to keep me mentally in it,” said Fopma, the defending Class 3A boys’ state cross country champion from Marion High School. “If there would have somebody, maybe I could have gone 20 seconds faster.”

Instead, Fopma settled for a 15-minute, 50-second effort and a 31-second margin of victory at the Cedar Rapids Invitational on Thursday at Noelridge Park.

Fopma is the top-ranked runner in 3A, and expected to duel with Iowa City West’s Kolby Greiner, rated No. 1 in 4A. But Greiner competed at Marshalltown instead Thursday, and Fopma ran alone.

“For the second race of the season, I’m right there, where I want to be,” Fopma said. “During the track season, I trained through a (leg) injury so I could be part of a state-championship team. It kept me out of some summer training, but I think I’m stronger and faster now.”

Iowa City High sophomore Caden Turnbough was second, in 16:21.

Cedar Rapids Prairie reversed the outcome from its home meet 12 days earlier, outrunning Linn-Mar for the title by a 49-72 margin. The Hawks had three runners in the top eight, all five scorers in the top 17.

“We ran really well, but it’s just a step along the way,” Prairie Coach Bill Schwarz said. “We have different guys attacking the race in different ways, experimenting. In some cases, it worked really well.”

Prairie’s Jack Pendergast, Mike Jasa and Robert Laue were fourth, fifth and eighth. Linn-Mar countered with a 3-6-10 effort by Dylan Dolezal, Colin Johnston and Trent Long.

Dubuque Wahlert was a surprise winner in a tight girls’ team race. The Golden Eagles tallied 93 points, followed by West (101), City High (108), Pleasant Valley (110) and North Scott (117).

Defending 4A girls’ state champ Bailey Nock overcame a fast start by Linn-Mar freshman Micah Poellet, taking over in the last two miles and prevailing in 18:18. Poellet finished in 18:31.

“She got out really fast,” Nock said of Poellet. “I knew I still had time to catch her, but I couldn’t afford to let her get away, and I couldn’t wait for her to come back to me, because she’s really good.”

At 4-foot-9, Poellet resembles former Pleasant Valley star McKenzie Yanek, now at the University of Alabama. She has been running since third grade.

“I like to start fast and get out to the front of the pack,” Poellet said. “I knew (Nock) was the state champ. I knew she was fast.”

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Laurdyn Meyer, also a freshman, was fifth.

City High and vastly improved Cedar Rapids Kennedy were third and fourth in the boys’ team race.
