CEDAR RAPIDS — The preliminaries are past.

The fun for Maquoketa Valley begins Tuesday.

Payton Ries scored 17 points and Sam Wall added 15, and the Class 2A 12th-ranked Wildcats led from wire to wire in a 50-37 victory over MFL MarMac in a girls’ basketball game Saturday morning at Kohawk Arena as part of Rivalry Saturday.

“We did some silly stuff late in the game, but I’m proud of our effort,” Wildcats Coach Scot Moenck said.

Maquoketa Valley will take a 2-0 mark into Tuesday’s game at Springville, the two-time defending 1A state champion.

“They’ll be really good competition,” Ries said. “If we’re ready to go, I think it will definitely be a good game to watch.”

Ries sparked the Wildcats in the second quarter, just after MFL MarMac (1-1) mounted a charge.

The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the quarter and snuck within 14-13, then Ries scored a pair of inside baskets, then Maci Freiburger added another.

“We just kept pushing. We wanted to get the best shots we could,” said Ries, who posted seven rebounds and four steals.

Gracie Gellersen’s 3-pointer at the horn gave the Wildcats a 25-16 halftime lead, and the margin never strayed below seven points after that.
