Springville rules overtime, outlasts Panorama at Rivalry Saturday

Rivalry Saturday: Menster, Nachazel carry the load in OT

CEDAR RAPIDS — Rylee Menster was cold. Mikayla Nachazel was in foul trouble.

But in overtime, none of that mattered.

The all-state duo combined for all of the Springville’s points in the extra session, and the Class 1A top-rated Orioles held off 2A No. 6 Panorama, 65-53, in a girls’ basketball game Saturday afternoon as part of Rivalry Saturday at Kohawk Arena.

“When we got to overtime, we figured it was 0-0 and we had four minutes to get it done,” Menster said.

They got it done, outscoring the Panthers 12-zip in extra time.

“We kind of take it four minutes at a time anyway, so it was probably to our benefit that overtime is four minutes,” said Orioles Coach Christina Zaruba.

The two-time defending 1A state champion, Springville (2-0) won its 14th straight game. It was a grind the whole way.

Down 47-40 with 5 minutes left, Panorama (1-1) rallied to tie it on Kellie Prince’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left.

Menster missed the front end of a one-and-one, then both teams missed shots at the end of regulation.

Then came overtime, and Springville owned it.

Menster scored on a baseline drive. Nachazel converted a three-point play, then added another basket. And the Orioles were out of the woods.

Nachazel finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Menster added 18 points and six assists, and Alyssa Jaeger posted 11 points and eight boards.

Morgan Johnk paced Panorama with 21 points. Devyn Kemble added 16 points.

Springville built a 13-4 advantage early in the second quarter, and it was still 18-12 when Nachazel was whistled for her third foul at the 4:35 mark.

Panorama got within 23-22 on Kemble’s 3-pointer with 1:45 left in the half. It was 25-22 at intermission.

The Panthers took their only lead of the second half at 34-32, then Springville scored eight in a row before Nachazel picked up her fourth.
