Long trip to Rivalry Saturday worth it for Algona Garrigan

Golden Bears score 27 off turnovers, handle Van Buren, 71-53

CEDAR RAPIDS — Algona Garrigan turned 21 Van Buren turnovers into 27 points, and rolled to a 71-53 victory in the first game of Rivalry Saturday at Kohawk Arena.

Jenna Boelter scored 25 points and dished out five assists to lead the Class 1A 14th-ranked Golden Bears (1-0), who made a 190-mile trek to get here.

The Golden Bears’ 71 points were third-most by a team in Rivalry Saturday history.

Garrigan made two surges to break it open.

First, it sandwiched a 16-2 run around the first-quarter break to take a 25-9 lead, its largest of the first half.

Then, after 2A No. 14 Van Buren (1-1) chipped the margin to 35-30 early in the third quarter, the Golden Bears answered with a 18-3 run to take an 18-point lead into the final period. The margin grew as large as 24 points on three occasions late.

Katie Noonan and Grace McGuire added 10 points for the winners.

Taryn Scheuermann paced Van Buren with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Freshman Isabel Manning added 12 points.
