Cedar Rapids Xavier girls bounce back against Linn-Mar

Saints respond to pair of blowouts with 62-54 victory

CEDAR RAPIDS — You never know how you’re going to react after you get beat badly. In Cedar Rapids Xavier’s case, that turned out to be pretty good.

The Saints got 18 points apiece from Emily Jasper and Caitlynn Daniels and overcame Linn-Mar, 62-54, in the girls’ portion of a girl-boy prep basketball double-header Friday night at Xavier’s Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Xavier (4-3) was coming off back-to-back lopsided losses to Iowa City West and Cedar Falls, both top-five teams in Class 5A. This was a recovery victory.

“We’ve gotten creamed the last two games, so coming into this, we knew we had to play hard and give it everything,” said Jasper, the junior forward whose point total was a career high. “I think we had confidence in ourselves that we could do it.”

Xavier Coach Tom Lilly wondered how much confidence his girls would have considering the circumstances.

“Our kids probably weren’t sure about their abilities coming into the game, after playing No. 1 and No. 3,” Lilly said. “That can really take away your confidence pretty darned quickly. It was important for us to come out and do some things, make some shots. Overall, we shot the ball well.”

Specifically, that would be 56 percent from the field, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc. Daniels not only hit 5 of her 6 attempts from distance, she did a great job at point guard of distributing to open teammates.

Daniels scored 15 second-half points.

“She just did a good job of getting the open player the ball,” Jasper said.

Xavier extended a one-point lead after a quarter to 29-22 at the break. It was 45-36 Saints after three, with Linn-Mar (1-6) coming back from double digits down late to make it a 60-54 game in the final minute.

Junior guard Macey Miller had a game-high 24 points for the youthful Lions, who played two freshmen and three sophomores.
