CEDAR RAPIDS — When in doubt, pick all of the defending champions.

The first Gazette boys’ basketball poll of the 2017-18 season has been released, and the No. 1 teams in each class are state tournament winners from last March. That means Iowa City West is atop Class 4A, Cedar Rapids Xavier atop 3A, Western Christian atop 2A and Grand View Christian atop 1A.

West has gotten off to a 2-0 start, beating West Des Moines Dowling in its opener last week, then edging Minneapolis DeLaSalle, 65-62, Saturday night in the Twin Cities. DeLaSalle has won six consecutive Class 3A state titles in Minnesota.

Sioux City East comes in No. 2, followed by Cedar Falls, Dubuque Senior and Des Moines Hoover. Linn-Mar (2-0) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (1-0) are seventh and eighth, respectively.

Two-time defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier (2-0) begins No. 1 in Class 3A. The Saints (2-0) had impressive wins last week over state tournament teams Mount Pleasant and Waverly-Shell Rock.

Glenwood is second, followed by Sioux City Heelan, Mount Pleasant and Oskaloosa. Dubuque Wahlert (1-1) of the Mississippi Valley Conference checks in at No. 10.

Western Christian is the top-ranked team in 2A, though the Wolfpack have not played a game, yet. Cascade (2-0) is second, followed by Van Meter, Forest City and East Marshall.

Grand View Christian had a busy opening week, winning four times to assume the No. 1 spot in 1A. North Linn (2-0), which returns its entire team from last season, when it finished third at state, comes in second.

Council Bluffs St. Albert is third, followed by LeMars Gehlen and Lynnville-Sully. Don Bosco is seventh.
