Pack lifts Prairie's boys to win at home invitational

Cross country: Iowa City West takes the girls' championship

CEDAR RAPIDS — They won’t wow you individually. And that’s fine.

“If we’re going to make some noise, it’s going to be with our pack,” said Bill Schwarz, boys’ cross country coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie.

The Hawks started their season with a holler.

Prairie’s front five were separated by a mere 19 seconds, and the Hawks ran away with the Prairie Invitational title Saturday at the College Community campus.

The Hawks tallied 61 points to pace the 20-team field. Waukee was next with 106, followed by Iowa City West (115) and defending Class 3A state champion Mount Vernon-Lisbon (130).

“It was a great start,” said senior Matt Lorenz, who paced the pack with a ninth-place finish (17:16). “We didn’t know what we had until today. But we do this every day in practice. We feed off each other.”

Cedar Falls’ Sam Schillinger won the boys’ individual crown for the second straight year in 16:24, 16 seconds ahead of Waukee’s Jackson Lewis. Jeremy Fopma of Marion was the top area individual, third in 16:47.

Shortly thereafter came the Prairie pack. Lorenz and Max Laue were ninth and 10th with identical times, then it was Cam Steffens (12th), Robert Laue (14th) and Elijah Vlasek (16th).

“I wasn’t expecting quite this sort of day,” Schwarz said. “We had a pretty good summer. We’ve got kids that are going to continue to develop and move up.”

Four Iowa City West girls ran in the top 12, and that enabled the Women of Troy to outscore Cedar Falls by a 50-65 margin. Waukee (120) was third.

Brina Kraft of Muscatine outkicked Reagan Gorman in the final 200 meters and crossed the finish line in 20:01. Gorman (20:04), a sophomore, was the runner-up for the second straight year.

“I knew she had more of a kick than me,” Gorman said.

Gorman was in the lead pack the whole way. She said she missed a couple weeks of running this summer due to injury, and focused on strength training.

“I think I gained some muscle,” she said.

Bailey Nock led West’s charge with a third-place time of 20:07. Claire Ronnebaum was sixth, Gabby Skopec 10th and Jessie Skopec 12th.

Prairie’s Hannah Frazee was fifth.
