CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Kernels announced Tuesday they will be extending protective netting around the field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The netting currently goes around the home-plate area from the beginning of each dugout but will be extended above each dugout to the outfield entrance to each dugout. The extension installation is expected to be ready for the home opener April 7.

Other teams in the Midwest League already have extended netting in a desire for extra safety. Kernels General Manager Scott Wilson told The Gazette last July the club would follow suit within the next two years.
