Prep football rewind: Lance Pedersen earns 100th career victory

Mount Vernon wins 4th straight, 62-6 over Anamosa

The first century milestone snuck up on Lance Pedersen.

"I had no clue I was even close," Pedersen said late Friday night, a couple hours after Mount Vernon dusted Anamosa, 62-6, for his 100th career victory. "It’s nice, but to me it’s more of a celebration for the amazing athletes and great coaches that I’ve been around. They’re the ones that make something like this happen.

"It’s not my achievement. It’s the program’s achievement."

Pedersen owns a career record of 100-43 in 13 years. He is 21-10 in three years at Mount Vernon, including an 11-3, Class 2A state runner-up campaign last year. He coached previously at Wilton for 10 seasons.

Mount Vernon is 4-2 this season with four consecutive wins.

“We started off with two 3A teams that are a combined 10-2 and both in the top 10,” Pedersen said, referring to Solon and West Delaware. “That prepared us for district play. I think things are headed in the right direction.”

The Mustangs were an offensive wrecking crew Friday, piling up 537 yards in just 32 plays from scrimmage for an average of 16.8 yards per play. That included a 7-of-7 passing night for Drew Adams, who threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns.

“We were pretty crisp on the offensive side of the ball, and our defense shut them down,” Pedersen said.

Pedersen is the son of West Branch Coach Butch Pedersen, who ranks 15th all-time on the state wins chart, with 282.

The Mustangs are one of three teams unbeaten in 2A District 5 play. They’ll play the other two — West Liberty and Williamsburg — in the final two weeks of the season. They are at Mediapolis next week.

CONGESTION ATOP CLASS A DISTRICT 4

Lisbon ensured that there won’t be an unbeaten in Class A District 4 when it tripped Wapsie Valley, 21-9, Friday night.

The outcome leaves the district with three teams — Lisbon (5-1 overall), East Buchanan (4-2) and Wapsie Valley (3-3) — sporting 3-1 district records with three weeks to play.

As of today, Wapsie Valley holds the lead in the point-differential tie-breaker (plus 38), followed by East Buchanan (plus 35) and Lisbon (plus 18). That would be the pecking order if the playoffs began today, and only two teams from each district are guaranteed playoff berths in the new, condensed postseason structure.

In Class A, as well as 1A, 2A and 3A, there are two wild-card berths available in addition to the seven district champions and the seven district runners-up. The first resume item is district record, so a third-place one-loss team should have a good chance to qualify.

LET THE 2A-4 WHIRLWIND BEGIN

Three of the top seven teams in The Gazette’s Class 2A rankings reside in District 4, and they’re about to embark on a round-robin journey.

No. 2 Union (6-0 overall, 4-0 district) is at No. 7 Waukon (5-1, 4-0) next week, then travels to West Union on Oct. 14 for a showdown with No. 1 North Fayette Valley (6-0, 4-0).

Waukon is at North Fayette Valley in Week 9.
