CEDAR RAPIDS — The Kennedy Cougars avoided an upset bid with ease.

Now, they’ll try to deliver a shocker of their own.

“It’s the postseason,” Coach Tony Vis said. “This is when Cinderella stories happen.”

Cedar Rapids Kennedy forced Dubuque Senior into 27 turnovers, shot 54 percent from the field and overwhelmed the Rams, 69-34, in a Class 5A girls’ basketball regional quarterfinal Wednesday night at Kennedy High School.

Hailey Dolphin scored 25 points, making all 10 of her shots inside the 3-point arc. And the Cougars’ quick hands accounted for 18 steals.

“We decided to go fast tonight,” Dolphin said. “We went back to our old press, and it paid off.”

Kennedy (6-16) will play at fifth-rated Cedar Falls (19-2) in a regional semifinal Saturday. The Tigers earned a first-round bye, and defeated Kennedy, 61-39, Jan. 10.

“We just need to come out with a lot of energy and not play scared,” Dolphin said. “We’ll be excited for that game.”

As for this game, it was decided early. Senior (1-20) had a brief 4-2 lead, then the Cougars’ press took hold. Consecutive layups by Dolphin, Olivia Hellweg, then Dolphin again highlighted an 11-0 run.

Dolphin later tallied seven points in a 9-0 second-quarter surge that made it 29-9. Kennedy led 34-13 at intermission, and it was 67-27 when the starters came out with 3:20 left.

“If there’s one thing this season has shown, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted,” Vis said. “It was good to see us put forth an impressive performance from start to finish.

“I’m impressed with the way we shared the ball. People sometimes talk about making the extra pass. I’d rather make the right pass.”

Auddie Alepra tacked on 14 points (on 6-of-8 shooting) with six rebounds, staking the Cougars to a 34-22 advantage on the boards.

Ashley Vis and Tessa Steffen scored eight points apiece, and Hellweg supplied five rebounds and six steals.

Alli Udelhofen scored eight points for the Rams.
