A district football championship is on the line Friday at West Union. So is the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A.

Top-ranked North Fayette Valley will host No. 2 Union in a 2A District 4 showdown this week. Both teams are 7-0 overall, 5-0 in district play. They are the final two unbeatens in 2A.

After a 4-6 season last year, Union has been dominant this fall. The Knights lead 2A in scoring offense (48.1 points per game) and scoring defense (4.1 ppg allowed).

North Fayette Valley is second in scoring defense at 5.6 points per game allowed and has been a unanimous No. 1 in The Gazette’s poll since early in the season.

There was one change in the poll this week, in Class 3A. Pella and Xavier had shared the top ranking for the last three weeks. Pella rides solo now after an impressive 38-0 win over then-No. 3 Norwalk.

The Dutch received five first-place votes to Xavier’s one and holds a 57-53 points edge on the No. 2 Saints.

West Des Moines Valley (4A) and Iowa City Regina (1A) remain unanimous No. 1s in their respective classes.

Valley is followed by West Des Moines Dowling and Ankeny Centennial in the big-school class. The Maroons and the Jaguars play Friday at Ankeny.

Cedar Rapids Washington and Iowa City High climbed a spot to fourth and fifth. City High hosts No. 6 Bettendorf on Friday.

Defending Class A champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck maintains a slight advantage in that class. The Rebels received three first-place votes and 51 points, edging Algona Garrigan and Saint Ansgar (48 apiece).

Audubon and Fremont-Mills split the six first-place votes evenly in 8-Player, with Audubon holding a 56-52 points advantage. Lone Tree and Turkey Valley are third and fourth, respectively.
