INDEPENDENCE — Ranked West Delaware wrestlers Mitchel Mangold and Harrison Goebel are headed back to the state tournament.

This year, they are bringing a few friends with them.

Six West Delaware wrestlers qualified for the state meet, including four district champions, as the Hawks claimed the team title at a Class 2A district meet Saturday at Independence High School.

“I knew coming in there was going to be a lot of good battles,” West Delaware Coach Jeff Voss said. “I think our kids that won really cranked it up in that last round.”

Six state qualifiers is the most for West Delaware since 2013 (9). The Hawks won the team title with 115 points over second-place Crestwood (94).

Mangold — third at state last season in the 145-pound bracket — started a flurry of West Delaware victories with a 7-0 decision over Jarret Orr of Independence at 152.

“We worked a lot on my feet to get more offense,” said Mangold, who has won 35 of 40 matches this season and is ranked fifth by The Predicament. “I didn’t have too much offense last year. That was a big focus this year, just scoring points.”

The Hawks scored a pair of mild upsets at 170 and 182. Sophomore Jack Neuhaus (29-12) broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown in the first sudden victory period to defeat fifth-ranked Tristan Hansmeier of Waukon.

“Just kept thinking, get the legs, get the legs,” Newhaus said. “It was there. Got it.”

182-pound junior Jordan Bries (28-14) avenged two recent defeats to Judd Grover of Crestwood with an electrifying pin in 1:54.

Goebel kept the surge going with the fourth win in a row for the Hawks at 195 by pinning Andy Lillegraven of Decorah in 1:09.

“It’s huge,” Bries said. “It motivates everybody and that has been huge this year. Just building off of each other and using each other’s energy to go out there and do what we’ve got to do with matches.”

West Delaware sophomore Evan Woods (113) and freshman heavyweight Carson Petlon also earned state berths with runner-up placements.

Third-place Union Community (87 points) qualified five wrestlers, highlighted by a 10-3 decision by fourth-ranked sophomore Jack Thomsen (42-2) over No. 2 Kaden Anderlik of Crestwood.

Four Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers earned state berths, while Decorah and host Independence each qualified three.

Decorah senior Phillip Ihde continued his impressive return from a knee injury that cost him three weeks. The third-ranked wrestler at 126 remained unbeaten (27-0) this season with a pin of Union’s Lake LeBahn in 5:57.
