NORTH ENGLISH — Add two more victories to the undefeated record of Kaleb Reeves.

The Sigourney-Keota senior made quick work of the 220-pound bracket at a Class 1A sectional wrestling meet Saturday at English Valleys with two pins totaling 2 minutes, 34 seconds.

“The objective wasn’t just to get the matches done quick, the objective was to score points,” Reeves said. “The goal was to keep my adrenaline pumping and keep scoring points.”

Reeves — ranked second in 1A at 220 by The Predicament — improved to 44-0 this season and could earn a fourth state tournament berth at a district meet next week.

Reeves placed seventh at state last year at 195, seventh in 2016 at 182, and was 0-2 at 182 in 2015.

“I’ve had some tough kids along the way, a lot of ranked kids,” Reeves said. “A lot of tough competitors and I’ll see some tough competitors ahead.”

Reeves will wrestle at Coe next season. With his college recruitment out of the way, he can focus on one last pursuit of a state championship.

“Mentally, he’s ready to go and he wants that state title real bad,” Sigourney-Keota Coach Craig Reeves said.

Ninth-ranked sophomore Mason Dye (106) and senior Nick Ives (138) also earned sectional titles for Sigourney-Keota, which placed second in the team standings with 161.5 points.

Pekin was first with 193.5. Both teams advanced to regional duals on Tuesday.

Iowa Valley powered its way to third place overall with 139.5 points, thanks to titles at 145 by 10th-ranked sophomore Ben Smith (49-3) and another at 182 from second-ranked junior Garet Sims, who needed just 42 seconds to pin two opponents.

“It was good,” Sims said. “I got to my shots and that is what I needed to get to. Try and get to my shots, make it crisp and don’t let anything look sloppy.”

Sims (50-1) placed fifth at state last year in the 182-pound bracket. He also qualified as a freshman at 160, but dropped two of three matches.

“Garet Sims has been focused all year,” Iowa Valley Coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “The kid has found another gear from last year. … He’s very hungry and he’s got the confidence that he can wrestle with anybody in the state. I believe he can as well.”

Fourth-place English Valleys (138 points) was led by tournament winners Seth Thompson (120) and John Fisher (195).

Senior Tylor Kane won at 170 for BGM, which placed fifth with 107.5 points.

Montezuma had two winners — freshman Kodie Strong at 113 and senior heavyweight Grant Battreall — and finished sixth (100 points).

HLV was seventh with 68 points.
