Terrell Jordan Jr. keys Cedar Rapids Kennedy to a 4A district track title

Linn-Mar's Payton Wensel wins 3 events in final home appearance

MARION — Leadoff? Anchor? Somewhere in between?

Terrell Jordan Jr. doesn’t care. Just put him out there and let him go.

“I like running,” Jordan said, matter-of-factly. “Whatever helps the team most.”

Even if it’s in a position not necessarily synonymous with glory.

Running second in Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s shuttle hurdle relay, Jordan was a difference-maker, moving the Cougars in front to stay. He also set personal bests in the long jump, the high jump and the 110-meter hurdles (also a school record) as Kennedy captured the boys’ title at Thursday’s Class 4A state-qualifying track and field meet at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The Cougars amassed nine automatic qualifiers and tallied 164.5 points. Linn-Mar was next with 134, followed by Cedar Falls (129.5).

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the state meet May 17-19 at Drake Stadium, Des Moines. The remainder of the field (top 12 non-automatic qualifiers statewide in each event) will be released Friday afternoon.

A senior, Jordan lowered the school record to 14.26 seconds in the 100 highs, and he did it on a run that wasn’t completely clean. He nicked a pair of hurdles.

“I’m really hoping to go 13.9 at state,” he said.

Jordan also sailed 22 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the long jump and ran on Kennedy’s shuttle that ran 57.35.

Cedar Falls was the girls’ champion with 181.5 points, followed by Linn-Mar (164). The Tigers have 12 automatic qualifiers, the Lions 10.

Linn-Mar’s Payton Wensel was a triple-winner in her final competition on her home track. She anchored the Lions to victory in the sprint medley relay (1:45.22), then took the open 400 and the 400 hurdles in 55.79 and 1:02.41, respectively.

“Three firsts, you can’t do more than that,” Wensel said (she did not run in the 400-meter relay). “But I would have liked to have run faster.”

It’s likely that Wensel will run against Southeast Polk star Sydney Milani in only one race at state next week, the 400.

“I hope it’s the fastest 400 of my life,” she said. “I’m just focused on running my race. If it’s not enough, that’s just that.”

Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s male sprinters put themselves in position to shine again at Drake Stadium next week; they earned championship flags two weeks ago at the Drake Relays in the 400- and 800-meter relays. Thursday, those foursomes were clocked in 42.13 and 1:27.55.

Waterloo West’s Sam Tudor was a four-time winner (100, 200, 400, 1,600 relay).
