Solon girls, Marion boys rule at Gruber Relays

Erin Kerkhoff spearheads Spartans' easy win; Blair Brooks sets a career-best in the long jump

SOLON — When Erin Kerkhoff races, she wears a necklace bearing eight small clips — one for each of the events in which she competed at the state track meet.

“I have to wear it,” she said. “I’m superstitious that way.”

By the time she is done at Solon High School, that necklace most likely will have continued to grow heavier.

Kerkhoff won the 400-meter dash and anchored a pair of winning relays as the Spartans ran away with the girls’ division of the Denny Gruber Relays on Tuesday at Spartan Stadium.

The junior outdueled North Cedar ace Grace Proesch at the tape in the sprint medley relay and the 1,600-meter relay. The Spartans’ sprint medley foursome of Sophie Nicol, Molly Duckett, Taylor Ryan and Kerkhoff set a meet record in 1:51.26.

“I knew I had to stay right behind (Proesch) on the backstretch,” Kerkhoff said. “I strided out at the end and had just a little bit more.”

Solon won seven events and rolled up 164.5 points. Mount Vernon was second with 107.5.

The necklace and all those clips — plus a memento from a state cross-country appearance as a freshman — were a gift from her parents. The ensemble includes a clip from a second-place finish in the Class 3A 1,600 relay last year.

The boys’ team race was much more competitive. Marion edged Mount Vernon, 108-104, for the title. Solon was third with 97 points, followed by Vinton-Shellsburg (93).

Marion’s Blair Brooks was a triple-winner, and his night included a career-best effort of 22 feet, 11 inches in the long jump.

“Because of the weather, I haven’t been able to jump much,” Brooks said. “This was the first time I competed in the high jump in a month.

“But I felt really good tonight. I was consistent; all of my jumps were over 22 feet. I feel comfortable and I just want to keep my mojo.”

Brooks cleared 6-2 in the high jump and claimed the 200 in 23.40 seconds.

Dyersville Beckman’s Mark Brown won all four events in which he took part. He ran on the Blazers’ victorious sprint medley, 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays, and won the 400-meter hurdles in 56.29 seconds, a result that didn’t satisfy him.

“I was hoping to go under 55,” said Brown, the defending 2A state champion in that event. “I was stuttering around the last turn. It’s something I hope I can fix in practice.”
