Abby Flanagan pitches North Linn softball into first place in the Tri-Rivers

Sophomore fans 15, walks none in a one-hit gem, and the Lynx sweep Lisbon

TROY MILLS — That’s Flanagan, rhymes with “fan again.”

Abby Flanagan pitched a 15-strikeout, one-hit gem in the first game, and Class 2A 14th-ranked North Linn swept 1A No. 7 Lisbon, 3-0 and 11-1, in a Tri-Rivers Conference softball doubleheader Monday night at North Linn High School.

“This was one of the toughest opponents we’ve had in a while, so I was pretty pumped,” Flanagan said.

They all were.

“We wanted both of these games pretty bad,” Lynx Coach Marv Porter said.

North Linn (19-3 overall, 12-0 Tri-Rivers) took firm control of the conference race. The Lynx did it behind Flanagan in the opener and a robust attack in the nightcap.

A sophomore, Flanagan didn’t walk a batter and was perfect through 4 1/3 innings before Lisbon’s Sam Schrantz singled through the left side of the infield. Taylor Techau hit into a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a wild pitch before Flanagan fanned Grace Clark to retire the side.

And nobody reached base again for the Lions (14-4, 12-2) in Game 1.

“I was pretty confident,” Flanagan said. “It wasn’t just one pitch, really. I like to work everything.”

The Lynx got a run in the first (Grace Flanagan singled home Kaitlyn Sommerfelt) and another in the second (Maddie Woods drove in Jill Smith), and it remained 2-0 until Grace Flanagan’s solo home run in the sixth.

And the way Abby Flanagan was humming, that was more of a luxury than a necessity. She threw 97 pitches, 70 for strikes.

North Linn broke the second game open early, scoring twice in the first inning and tacking on four tallies (on six hits) in the second.

Hannah Bridgewater homered and scored three times. She leads the state in runs scored with 46.

“I’ve been trying to center up the ball,” she said. “(The home run) came off the bat really well.”

The Lynx posted 14 hits in the five-inning nightcap. Natalie Gallery and Olivia Rauch had three apiece.

Abby Flanagan pitched the first four innings of the second game, allowing one hit and striking out five.
