CEDAR RAPIDS — A new season can mean many things for a team. There often are new players joining the team, new positions being filled and new memories being made.

One of the new players who joined the Cedar Rapids Xavier boys’ soccer varsity this year, senior goalie Jack Lemke, also is trying a new position.

“Last year I was a forward on JV and this year I am playing goalie for the first time ever,” Lemke said. “It is a whole different experience.”

Having the support of the returning players has made the transition smoother.

“Jack has a lot of natural talent and has played very well this season,” senior captain Thomas Bean said. “He is learning more and more every day and has filled in great.”

The season has been full of ups and downs, but the Saints are confident everything is coming together.

“Our schedule at the beginning of the season was against the best teams in our conference,” Bean said. “We are getting better every day and look to finish the season strong.”

The ultimate goal of their season still is to reach the state tournament.

“We are looking to improve over the next few weeks so we are sharp for the state tournament,” Lemke said.
