Matt Mims, AJ Green are MVC divisional boys' basketball players of the year

CEDAR RAPIDS — Matt Mims of Cedar Rapids Xavier and A.J. Green of Cedar Falls have been named boys’ basketball players of the year in their respective divisions of the Mississippi Valley Conference, it has been announced.

Mississippi Division MVP Mims, a senior guard, is averaging 21 points per game for the Saints, who are seeking a Class 3A state championship three-peat. He recently set the Xavier record for most career points and is headed to South Dakota State to play college basketball.

Valley Division MVP Green, also a senior guard, is averaging 26 points for a Cedar Falls team that has qualified for the state tourney in 4A. He is shooting 49 percent from 3-point range and 93 percent from the free-throw line.

Green will play college ball at Northern Iowa, where his father, Kyle, is an assistant coach.

Steve Bergman and his staff at Iowa City West are Mississippi Division coaches of the year. Wendell Eimers and his staff at Dubuque Senior are Valley Division coaches of the year.

Other first-team picks in the Mississippi Division include Patrick McCaffery and Seybian Sims of Iowa City West, Trey Hutcheson of Linn-Mar and Jackson Joens of Xavier. In the Valley Division, first-teamers include Kris Murray of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
