CEDAR RAPIDS — There’s no movement atop The Gazette’s weekly boys’ basketball poll, and that’s despite a pair of No. 1s losing last week.

Iowa City West remains the top team in Class 4A and Cedar Rapids Xavier first in 3A, even though they each dropped a game. West lost Saturday to two-time defending Kansas champion Bishop Miege, 66-46, at a tournament in Quincy, Ill., while Xavier fell to Dubuque Senior, 61-57.

The Trojans are 12-2, with Des Moines Hoover (14-1), Cedar Falls (11-3), Des Moines North (14-2) and Waukee (14-2) rounding out the top five in 4A. Sioux City East was the big dropper, going from third to seventh after a loss to 3A Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Xavier (11-4) still has not lost to a 3A team this season, holding a 3-0 record against those opponents. Oskaloosa (15-1) remains right on the Saints’ heels at second, followed by Mount Pleasant (14-3), Glenwood (14-2) and Norwalk (14-2).

Four of last week’s top 10 in the class lost games, with West Delaware dropping out of this week’s rankings.

Class 2A remains the strongest class from top to bottom, with six teams still undefeated. That means the top six is unchanged from a week ago, with Western Christian (16-0), Cascade (18-0), Van Meter (16-0), Treynor (16-0), East Marshall (16-0) and South Hamilton (18-0) in that order.

After them, it’s once-beaten Aplington-Parkersburg (16-1), Sheldon (15-2), Forest City (15-2) and Garner GHV (16-3). GHV has won 12 in a row and is new to the 2A poll.

Grand View Christian (15-0) has been No. 1 in 1A from the beginning of the season and recently gained the services of 6-foot-7 junior transfer Issa Samake, a native of Mali, who had been playing at a school in Tennessee. Samake has college scholarship offers from Iowa State, among others.

Behind GVC is North Linn (19-0), Remsen St. Mary’s (16-0), Dunkerton (16-1) and Algona Garrigan (15-2).
