CEDAR RAPIDS – Jordan Amelon gave herself a belated birthday present a day after her 19th birthday.

She will have to wait a little bit to unwrap it. The new gold medal is on order for the Iowa City West senior.

Amelon shot 79, tying Dubuque Senior’s Maddie Hawkins and earning co-medalist honors at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet on Tuesday at St. Andrews Golf Club. The medal matches the one from her CRANDIC title and puts her in the lead for top MVC Mississippi Division honors.

“I didn’t make any dumb decisions,” Amelon said. “I took it hole by hole. I didn’t think too far ahead, so overall I think I just played smart.

“Your goal is always to win. I think I could have gotten lower. There’s more room to improve on.”

She had plenty to celebrate Tuesday.

“I think this is a good belated birthday present,” West Coach Mary Goodfellow said. “Don’t you?”

Amelon managed the course well. With chilly conditions early and a stiff breeze later in the day, she remained steady without carding a score higher than five the entire round.

“She’s been real consistent lately,” Goodfellow said. “She hasn’t been shooting any low numbers, but no big high numbers. I think that helps her confidence a lot.”

Amelon broke par on three holes, including twice on the back nine. She tamed the par-5 12th hole and then recorded a two on No. 17. She sunk a shot from off the green for the latter.

“I had a good putt,” Amelon said. “I was off the green barely and it was pretty steep so I was able to get it up the hill.”

Amelon, who finished third in last year’s Super Meet and 16th at the Class 5A state meet, has transformed a self-described weakness to a strength. Goodfellow recognized Amelon’s improvement, watching her knock down two 4-foot putts on the final two holes.

They have also worked on better approach shots, getting closer to the hole and avoiding possible three-putt greens.

“It’s fun to work with her on those finer things where she can shoot three or four above par if she puts it all together,” Goodfellow said. “I’m really proud of her.”

Cedar Falls captured the team title with 352, topping Senior by four strokes. Dubuque Wahlert was third overall at 363.

Linn-Mar was the top area team, placing fourth at 379 and edging Cedar Rapids Prairie by three.

Kristen Harding led Linn-Mar with 88, placing seventh individually. Prairie’s Peyton Staab was ninth at 89. Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Katie Choate was 10th.
