CEDAR RAPIDS — The state rankings in a stacked Class 3A have been fluid all season.

Dike-New Hartford is on the move again, and its movement at the moment is upward.

The Wolverines emerged from a 16-team gauntlet to capture the Westside Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday at Jefferson High School. They defeated Linn-Mar, 25-14, 21-25, 15-8, in the championship match.

“Such a competitive field,” DNH Coach Diane Harms said. “If you come away with a championship here, you know you’ve beaten some good teams to do it.”

The 3A fifth-ranked Wolverines (37-4) were one of three 3A teams that reached the semifinals. They defeated No. 3 Mount Vernon (26-6), 25-21, 25-20, while No. 2 West Delaware (34-3) was eliminated by Linn-Mar, 25-19, 25-20.

For 5A No. 5 Linn-Mar (24-8), it was the fourth time in four Saturday tournaments that it took home a second-place finish.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Linn-Mar Coach Teresa Bair said. “To beat West Delaware, after they beat us (in the Monticello Invitational), that’s huge. And to beat Ankeny Centennial, obviously, that’s really huge.”

The Lions won two of three pool matches — the lone loss was a three-setter to DNH — then began their march through the brackets. They swept 5A No. 2 Centennial (the defending big-school state champion) in the quarterfinals, then did the same to West Delaware (the 2015 4A champ) in the semis.

“Overall, it was a really good day,” Linn-Mar’s Emilee McGowan said. “We played together as a team. We were all excited. We got a little tired at the end, but overall, it was a really good day.”

Dike-New Hartford ruled the first set in the finals, then Linn-Mar answered. Down 6-2, the Lions scored seven straight points.

At 19-19, Ellie Von Lehmden knocked down three kills in a pivotal four-point surge.

But the Wolverines regained the momentum for good in Game 3, scoring six straight points for a 7-1 lead.

“Their defense, I’m sorry, but they’re so good,” Bair said. “But we were inspired today. The girls played hard for every point all day. I think today validated that we’re pretty good.”

DNH, Centennial and West Delaware were unbeaten in pool play. Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the other pool with a 2-1 mark, knocking off Marion and Dubuque Hempstead. The J-Hawks (15-13) gave Mount Vernon a challenge before falling in a three-set quarterfinal.

Marion beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy for the consolation-bracket title.
