IOWA CITY — Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Keegan Schultschik reached a coveted milestone.

One that seemed so distant his freshman season when he had a losing record, wrestling up a weight as an undersized 113-pounder. Hard work and a perseverance paid dividends for the 120-pound senior.

Schultschik stepped off the mat and was greeted with balloons, a poster and posed for a quick picture, commemorating his 100th career victory Saturday at Iowa City High’s Clyde Bean Duals, which was won by the Class 3A seventh-ranked Little Hawks. Schultschik went 5-0 and made the all-tournament team.

He pinned Iowa City High’s Matt Rew in 53 seconds to reach the win plateau.

“It means a lot,” said Schultschik, who has 101 career wins and 54 career pins. “I’ve been looking forward to it all year. I figured I’d get it about this event.

“It was a far off goal. I had a rough freshman year. I got in the room and did some work and got better. The last three seasons have been pretty good.”

Schultschik made some huge gains between his first two seasons. He qualified and won a match at the 2016 state tournament. A first-team all-Mississippi Valley Conference selection last year, Schultschik finished third at district and missed a second state trip. The 10th-ranked Saint dedicated himself to be better on his feet and in the bottom position to return to Des Moines.

“I was back in the room over the summer, getting better to get back there,” Schultschik said. “Now, I need to get back there. That’s all I was thinking about. It’s the ultimate goal. Get back down there and do some damage, hopefully.”

Xavier Coach Ryan Chambers said 100 wins is a secondary goal to getting back to the state tournament and reaching the podium. He praised Schultschik’s work ethic, leadership and unorthodox style on the mat.

“He’s grown immensely,” Chambers said. “He does things you can’t teach. The stuff that gives coaches gray hairs, but he’s fun to watch.”

City High rolled through the field, beating Decorah, 53-15, in the final. The Little Hawks won at least nine matches in each dual.

Ethan Wood-Finley (106), Garrett Bormann (113), Reece Caven (126), Kyle Hefley (152), Brandon Lalla (170) and 195-pounder Jacob Dykes were all-tournament performers for City High).
