Iowa’s 12th Class of 2018 football commitment is also its highest rated.

Indianapolis cornerback D.J. Johnson tweeted Tuesday he’s picking the Hawkeyes over Notre Dame. He also had offers from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Purdue, Cincinnati, Duke and Syracuse, among others.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Johnson, who attends North Central High School, is rated as a 4-star recruit by 247Sports and 3 stars by Rivals.

He ranks 37th in the country among cornerbacks and No. 4 overall in Indiana by 247Sports.

“I think what played the biggest role was probably just the people at Iowa,” Johnson told “I think it’s just a special place.”

Johnson is Iowa’s second defensive back commit in the Class of 2018, joining Terry Roberts of Erie, Pa. He’s also the second 2018 commit from the Hoosier state, following Mishawaka tight end Anthony Torres.

Johnson’s announcement doubled as a birthday gift to his mother.

“Dear Mom, ever since (I) was a kid I’ve had dreams of playing at the highest level possible and you’ve always told me and my sister that with faith and hard work we can do anything we put our minds to,” Johnson wrote. “You’ve been by my side through (it) all. When no one else believed in me you always had my back.

“Growing up we didn’t have it the easiest, things didn’t always go our way but you always made a way out of no way. A single mother working two jobs to provide for her kids day in and day out. All the things you sacrificed, all the days you went without, all the times you went hungry so that we could eat, all the sleepless nights that you had, and I never heard you complain not even once.

“You showed me what true hard work was. You made me into the man I am today, I owe it all to you, everything I do is for you and I could never repay you for everything you’ve done for me and my sister.

“But on your day I can give you this … So to my number one fan on her day (I) would like to announce that I am accepting a full ride scholarship to THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA!! GO HAWKEYES! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMA I LOVE YOU, THIS ONE’S FOR YOU.”
