CEDAR RAPIDS — West is best.

The final Gazette boys’ basketball poll of the season has Iowa City West atop Class 4A and West Delaware at the head of 3A. The postseason in both classes begins Monday night, with 3A district play and first-round 4A substate play.

Iowa City West stayed at No. 1 despite a loss in its regular-season finale this past Saturday. The Trojans (18-3) lost in the Twin Cities to Cretin-Derham Hall of St. Paul, 85-72.

Two of West’s three losses were to out-of-state teams, its only in-state loss coming at the hands of Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Waukee is a solid second behind West in 4A, followed by Dubuque Senior, Sioux City East and West Des Moines Valley.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy moved up in the final poll from ninth to sixth.

West Delaware went 21-0 in the regular season, one of only four teams not to lose in the regular season. The others were 1A members North Linn, Remsen St. Mary’s and Ar-We-Va.

Waverly-Shell Rock (19-1) is second in 3A, followed by Pella, Mount Pleasant and Sioux City Heelan. A loss to Grinnell moved Mount Vernon down from fifth to ninth.
