Dereck Rodriguez throws well again as C.R. Kernels shut out Burlington, 5-0
BURLINGTON — Dereck Rodriguez and Nathan McIver combined on a four-hitter Monday night as the Cedar Rapids Kernels shut out the Burlington Bees, 5-0, at Community Field.
The Kernels (59-47 overall, 23-14 Midwest League’s second half) have won two of three games in the series, with the finale Tuesday night at 6:35.
Jaylin Davis hit a three-run home run for Cedar Rapids in the sixth inning to essentially put the game out of reach. Kevin Garcia’s RBI single in the fifth opened the scoring.
Rodriguez (4-11) gave up just three hits in seven innings to get the pitching victory. He has pitched at least six innings in his last nine starts, lowering his season earned run average from 7.71 to 5.08 in that span.
Davis and Luis Arraez had two hits each for the Kernels.
Eddie Del Rosario of the Kernels was named Midwest Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Del Rosario allowed two hits in six shutout innings in his lone start last week, striking out 11.
