PEORIA, Ill. — Travis Blankenhorn hit his first home run, driving in three runs to help the Cedar Rapids Kernels gain a double-header split with the Peoria Chiefs via a 7-1 Game 2 win Tuesday night at Dozer Park.
Peoria won the opener, 10-1.
Blankenhorn hit a two-run homer the other way to left-center field in the fourth inning to put Cedar Rapids on top for good, 2-1. He added a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Zander Wiel had a two-run triple in that inning for the Kernels (65-55, 29-22 second half). Brady Anderson (1-0) threw six innings of four-hit, one-run ball to pick up the pitching victory.
Chris Chinea had four RBIs and Leobaldo Pina a three-run homer in the opener for Peoria. Starting pitcher Sam Gibbons (6-4) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
The Kernels are two games up on Burlington and three ahead of Quad Cities in the Western Division’s second-half standings in the race for two available playoff spots.
