2A power Sumner-Fredericksburg rules at Linn-Mar

Prep volleyball: Cougars rally past Marion in semis, then sweep Linn-Mar for the title

MARION — A passer-by was overheard as Sumner-Fredericksburg readied for its championship match at the Linn-Mar Invitational volleyball tournament:

“That’s a nice little team they have.”

Forget the “little.”

Yes, Sumner-Fredericksburg is a Class 2A school, and yes, it won the championship of the 12-team tournament Saturday. No, it wasn’t a fluke. Nor was it a surprise.

The 2A second-ranked Cougars survived a scare in the semifinals, then went on to defeat 5A No. 12 Linn-Mar, 21-12, 21-18, in the finale.

“It was fun coming down here,” senior outside hitter Becca Pagel said. “We don’t see this kind of team much up our way. There was a lot of height down here, and we had to adjust.”

Last year’s 2A runner-up to Western Christian, Sumner-Fredericksburg improved to 14-0. The Cougars’ do-or-die moment came in the semifinals, against Marion, in which they dropped the first set and faced a 20-18 deficit in the second.

But they scored the next four points to square the match, then won the third set, 15-12, to reach the final.

Linn-Mar (15-4) swept its way to the championship match, but didn’t have enough to challenge the Cougars.

“They were the better team,” Lions Coach Teresa Bair said. “I don’t have any qualms losing to them. That’s a quality opponent. But we didn’t pursue the ball like we had during the day.”

Sumner-Fredericksburg scored six consecutive points for an 11-5 lead in the opener, and the Lions got no closer than four points in the set. Linn-Mar did hold a 14-11 lead in Game 2 before the Cougars pulled even, then pulled away. Pagel pounded a pair of kills in a match-ending 4-1 run.

“We played pretty well all day until the last match,” said Lions setter Ellie Anderson. “They’re a good team.”

Linn-Mar rolled through pool play without much stress, then beat Muscatine (21-7, 21-9) in the quarterfinals and Cedar Rapids Prairie (21-15, 21-18) in the semifinals.

Sumner-Fredericksburg, Linn-Mar and Marion (10-3) were the pool champions.
